There once was some data, sitting in a chart . . .
Once we were working on a project that focused on first generation students rand Pell grant recipients. The client, an institution of higher education, had a tiny population of minority students. “Well, they are most likely suffering from lack of retention, just like the first generation and Pell grant recipients.” “Wait a second,” we said, “let’s review that data.” It turns out that that tiny group of minority students was retaining fall to fall at a higher rate than their white first gen and/or Pell peers. We were able to take that data and write about it as a strength.
Lesson learned: Check your data. Don’t make assumptions.
